It marked the return of bassist Twiggy Ramirez (Jeordie White), reuniting with the band for the first time since The Golden Age of Grotesque (2003). The album explores themes of personal disintegration, celebrity disillusionment, and emotional decay, reflecting frontman Marilyn Manson's tumultuous personal life during its creation. Recording took place primarily in Hollywood, California, from 2008 to early 2009.
